My trip to visit Julie, my college roommate June 20th - 22nd 2014
Some people may have wondered how or why I'd go visit my college roommate 1 week before moving our family of 5 to a new home in Stoughton. I know why. This weekend was just what I needed. Who needs a spa when you can spend quality time with a best friend like Julie!
Julie lives in Oxford, OH. Oxford is a town of 25,000. It is an hour from Cincinnati and is home of Miami University. Julie has been there a year working at the university as a professor in exercise physiology. Now with that comes several perks. ..like VO2 Max testing and anaerobic threshold testing. Those are exercise tests used to measure oxygen carrying capacity and the ability to sustain energy while cycling till you pass out. Lucky me got to do both!! After our 75 min yoga/Pilates class she brought me to her exercise lab and I got to be the subject!! I passed the VO2 max with flying colors.....the other test that sprinters / football players excel at I was far below average...not to my surprise.
After being subject we spent countless hours doing our hanging out and chilling. You know....eating salads, drinking berries smoothies, reading vegetarian times, and walks to TJ Max to look for new yoga mats and running gear.
In my three days there we ran 15 miles through and around Oxford, hit the amazing organic whole food section of the Kruger grocery store several times, and picked mulberries while on our evening walks.
Jokingly I teased Julie that I could threaten my kids that if they don't behave they may have to go visit Julie....no microwave, no TV, no meat..and countless hours of chatting. I even gave up my plane ticket home to spend another 8 hours driving Julie back to Wisconsin.
I have to describe for your our picnic lunch on the road....sautéed tempee in ezeciel wraps with fresh bell peppers and kalamata olives while sitting on a Boston marathon post race foil cape. Who approaches us but a rainbow person with a backpack and two labs. He asks, "any chance you may be headed to Utah?" Good thing our car was packed and no room....no really we wouldn't have offered a ride anyway. Or at least I wouldn't have.
Another highlight was our trip to Jungle Jim's. It is the most amazing grocery store!! It had waterfalls with zoo animals and trains around the perimeter and amazing inside displays of fire trucks above the isle and isles of hot sauce and fish aquariums in the seafood section.
I didn't mind one bit that our evenings were without TV. Who needs it when you can read sports medicine journals, ultra marathon books, vegetarian magazines. I almost forgot the best part...critiquing who Julie matches with on e-harmony!!
Our trip wouldn't be complete without a phone call to our friend Janine. Janine, Julie, and I were college roommates for 3 years at Winona. Janine now loves in Vancouver, Washington and is busy building a home and working long hours as a vet. She called us the final night right before we were headed to bed. It was like old times chatting....the three of us...all cracking jokes and making fun. Of course Jill is nodding off and Janine and Julie continue the laughing.
Hopefully our next reunion will be in Vancover???? Until then......
