Porcupine Mountains August 10 - 13 , 2018
Porcupine Mountains August 10 - 13 , 2018
Thursday: I surprised we haven't done this adventure yet. Matt and I only have 4 days for an adventure so it has to be close. After work we drove to Minocqua and stayed in our RV. We stopped in Wausau to fuel up on our last ice cream...at least for a couple days. Once to our RV we hit the sack so we could get an early morning start.
Friday: Before we hit the road for the Porkies we swung by Mark and Marisa's and John and Carolyn's to say hello. Mark and Marisa have a couples only weekend at their place. Seeing their house without kids in it seemed a little odd! We arrived at the Porkies around 11:30...a little bit later than we intended. We started out on Escarpment Trail. This was a 4.3 mile trail on sheer cliffs and with scenic vistas of the Lake or the Clouds. Lunch was half way in on the trail. Once to Lake of the clouds we took photos with all those vacationers who drive up to the scenic point, hop out of their car, take a photo and hop back in...not how we like to experience a park with so much more to offer. Next we headed to Lake Superior Trail and hiked 4.6 miles to our campsite at Lone Rock. I lucked out finding this amazing campsite with a gorgeous rock lined shoreline with calm Lake Superior in view. We spent our evening laid out on the rocks watching he sunset while visiting with our campsite neighbors...two high school classmates who get away on these adventure trips with the dog Luna. Dinner consisted of quinoa and tuna for jill and spam and rice for Matt. We crashed before nightfall hit to the sounds of Lake Superior. Unfortunately neither one of us slept too well...we were both so hot! Plus I overdosed on coconut, quinoa, and dried apricots...I literally felt like I was gonna puke and not be able to make the remaining 30 miles I had yet to hike!
Friday:
Thank goodness I woke up 100% ready to go! I decided I needed to eat more carbs and less fiber. Peanut butter and honey covered white tortillas never tasted better! After morning coffee and cocoa on the beach we packed up and set out on the Lake Superior hiking trail. After around 4.5 miles we turned south on the next trail...Little Carp River Trail. We had lunch on a creek. Carrot chips, Jerkey, and fruit bar for me and granola bar, jerkey, and pop tart for Matt. The Little Carp River trail was interesting terrain in that we had to cross the creek several times. Our total distance today was 11.3 miles. The final few miles were challenging...we both found ourselves going into machine mode to make it. Thank goodness Matt agreed to carry the majority of our weight. I probably only carried 15 pounds...he on the other hand probably carried 45 pounds! Our campsite this night was on the creek. Matt was in heaven when he stripped down to his undies and took a bath in the creek. I didn't even have the energy to do it. We enjoyed our dinner by the fire...chicken and potatoes topped off with trail mix. After our evening fire we hit the sack, this time without the fly on our tent...much better! We both slept so soundly...10 hours! It helped that it was cooler.
Sunday: Today we hiked our first 4.5 miles pretty quickly...so quickly that we missed our turn. We found ourselves at a parking lot...whoops...at least it only added 2 miles...we had to skip the summit peak because of that. We had our lunch in the parking lot and set out for Mirror Lake. Once there we pumped water and had our mid afternoon snacks. Matt was dragging this day...I on the other hand felt pretty good! The next stretch...North Mirror Lake was't too exciting. The bugs were heavy today...or maybe we stunk more. We finally arrived at our campsite at the base of Lake of the Clouds. The last two nights we enjoyed the sounds of the Lake and the stream, tonight was so silent...other than the raccoons and coyote. Tonight's dinner was tuna and potatoes for me and rice and spam for Matt. Our site this evening was't as secluded as the other two nights. We had several hikers wonder by late into the evening.
Monday:
We both woke up early this morning. After our normal breakfasts we packed up and set on Escarpment Trail. I'm glad we were able to see this trail again however going west to east. The sun coming up over Lake of the Clouds was so beautiful! After finishing our final 4 miles we gave one another high 5's and headed home. Matt craved McDonald's and Jill craved a vegetable green salad with turkey, avocado, and lemon with 1/2 quart of coconut milk.
Our trip covered 38.5 miles in 3 days. Can't wait to do it again!
